It may have been an unusual choice for an adult couple, but when the recent long weekend rolled around, my boyfriend and I decided Orlando was the perfect getaway.
It had been over ten years since either of us had visited the land of Disney, but since we still consider ourselves pretty young at heart, we decided a return trip was in order.
It ended up being one of the most fun-filled and memorable vacations we’ve had as a couple. So, if you’re considering your own mini-break to Orlando, here are five fun things to do as a couple (or as a family).
Of course, you can’t plan a trip to Orlando without mentioning Disney World. At first, we felt a little silly visiting with all the kids, but we were soon having so much fun that all our worries melted away. It wasn’t long before we were happily posing for pictures with the Princesses and getting our thrills on the various rides. Make sure you book your fast passes before you arrive to skip the long lines!
For something a little more grown-up (but still plenty of fun), we took a day trip to the Kennedy Space Center. The Center has lots of interesting and interactive exhibits that tell the story of space travel from the early days of the space race to the latest in discoveries and technologies. It was interesting and is definitely a place where visitors of all ages can have a great time, and learn something new.
The dinner shows in Orlando are very famous, and there’s an amazing variety on offer. Whatever you’re interested in - comedy, cabaret, dance or theatre - there’s bound to be something on, especially in summer. We decided to go for something a bit different and caught a murder mystery show, where you (and your table mates) race other guests to solve the mystery. We didn’t win, but we did have a great time trying to figure out whodunit.
We also booked in a couple of truly romantic activities to enjoy between our light-hearted escapades. One of the best things we did was get an early morning hot air balloon ride to watch the sun come up. The balloon was surprisingly stable, so it was easy to walk around the basket and take in the views. It was one of my most romantic experiences, and definitely something I’d recommend.
One of the most unique things that we did in Orlando was taking an airboat out in search of manatees. The absolute highlight was when we found a pod of manatees and had the chance to snorkel with them in the wild. For such big mammals, they were surprisingly graceful, and although we didn’t get too close, it was an amazing activity to experience while in Orlando.
