It came as a bit of a surprise to our family when my husband and I chose Cartagena, Colombia as the destination for our annual romantic escape. However, the city is friendly, safe and filled with interesting and romantic activities for couples. Here are ten of our favorite romantic activities that we enjoyed immensely during our time in Cartagena.
1. City Tour
We knew that the city of Cartagena is very picturesque and beautiful, so we started our stay with a walking tour through the city’s historic cobblestone streets. There are also various cute shops and cafés to stop in and enjoy.
2. Harbor Cruise
A sunset cruise is always romantic, and the one in Cartagena did not disappoint. We enjoyed cocktails and canapés as the boat cruised around the harbor as the sun set, allowing us to take in the stunning and romantic views.
3. Rosario Islands
Not far from Cartagena are the Rosario Islands, an archipelago of gorgeous tropical islands with white sandy beaches and a laidback vibe. They are perfect for relaxing and the snorkeling is amazing – with a large variety of tropical fish and a variety of corals in a rainbow of colors to see.
4. Totumo Mud Volcano
One of the “must do” things in Cartagena is both fun and romantic. The Totumo Mud Volcano is a very small volcano that is filled with mineral-rich mud. Legend has it that the mud has properties that are extremely beneficial for your skin and health. We ended the day covered head-to-toe in the volcano’s mud and I swore my skin glowed brighter the next day.
5. Cooking Class
There’s something very romantic about cooking a delicious meal together, so my husband and I enjoyed a traditional cooking class in Cartagena. The city has great cuisine, thanks to the many different groups who have influenced the cooking over the years. We are definitely looking forward to trying our newfound skills at home!
6. Shopping at Bazurto Market
I love shopping at beautiful tropical markets, and my husband at least tolerates it for me! At the bustling Bazurto Market in the city, we managed to find some beautiful souvenirs of our trip for us, and our loved ones.
7. Playa Blanca
Of course, no romantic beach escape is complete without taking a walk on a sandy beach and enjoying the cool blue waves of the ocean. Our favorite beach in Cartagena was Playa Blanca, about 45 minutes from downtown Cartagena. It is a stunning white sand beach that was the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon swimming and snorkeling.
8. Dine at Restaurante 1621
My husband and I are serious foodies, so a romantic and delicious dinner is always a requirement on every itinerary. We chose Restaurante 1621, which serves an authentic Colombian menu in a beautiful and romantic setting.
9. Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas
One of the most popular landmarks in Cartagena is the 17th century castle perched high on a hilltop and overlooking the city. The fortress is open to visitors and you can take a tour around it, enjoying its old world charm.
10. Dance salsa at Café Havana
Dancing is always a must on when we travel, especially for our annual romantic holidays, and we knew when we chose Cartagena, that salsa dancing was a must. Our favorite spot was Café Havana, a lively and local bar where you can stay on the dance floor until the early hours of the morning.
